aristocracy. This extends from the Monarchy through family links down to the provincial
squirearchy, and links in turn into the Global Economic Network like Anthony Sampson's
interlocking circles.
Common denominators that permeate this complex network include the City of London, Eton
College and the Brigade of Guards. The Australian Latham Baillieu family are connected to
Rio Tinto Zinc, the Rothschilds, the Banque Nationale de Paris, and the Coldstream Guards.
The Hon. Edward Latham Baillieu was also at one time Deputy Grand Master of the United
Grand Lodge of England.
An interesting example of how the mysterious echelons of the Ruling Elite part company
from ordinary upper stratas of society occurs with successive Chiefs of the Defence Staff,
Field Marshals Lords Vincent and Inge, General Lord Guthrie and Admiral Lord Boyce, all of
them automatically involved before and after retirement with important Service,
Government and business circles.
Lords Vincent and Inge enjoyed middle-of-the-road private educations, as did Admiral Boyce,
serving in the Royal Artillery and the Infantry respectively. Both went on to company
directorships, predictably in the Defence Industry. Lord Guthrie, educated at Harrow, like
Eton an exclusive public school, was commissioned into the Welsh Guards, married the
daughter of a Coldstream Guards officer, and is now a director of Sir Evelyn de Rothschilds
N.M. Rothschild Bank and a member of the David Rockefeller-Henry Kissinger-Zbigniew
Brzezinski Trilateral Commission.

SIR - I object to Denis MacShane's statement that euro scepticism is xenophobic (report, Aug
7). Far from it. What I object to about the European Union is that it is itself overtly
xenophobic, a closed-bordered Caucasian club looking to create confrontation in trade talks
with the rest of the world, where we used to just get on with it to the betterment of all. The
EU is intentionally deeply damaging to other places. Africa, for instance, wants to trade more
with Europe but finds itself discriminated against by the EU. Not by Britain, nor by
France nor by Russia or Portugal, but by the EU. This is wrong; different areas of
he world are different, not inferior.
The European dream might have seemed rosy 50 years ago to generations who turned my
home continent into one big bomb site, but to me it is an unrequired exclusive club, an
extension of the political elitism that caused two world wars in one century.

We are grateful to the Washington Post, The New York Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended out meetings and respected their promises of descretion for almost forty years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subjected to the lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is now more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supranation sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national auto-determination practised in past centuries.
